Frequently asked

How do I move and shoot?

Drag anywhere on the left half of the screen to walk. The blue button shoots, and your shots find the nearest enemy on their own. The green button runs and the amber button rolls — both of those arrive with the blue hat, which is hanging on a hook in your cell at the start of the game. Open the pause menu for the full controls at any time.

Where is my progress saved? Can I move it to a new phone?

The game saves itself as you play, to a file inside the app on your own device. There is no account and no cloud save, so progress does not transfer between devices, and deleting the app deletes the save.

Does it need the internet?

No. The game itself never connects to anything, and it works in Airplane Mode, on a plane, underground, anywhere. The one optional exception is Apple’s Game Center: if you are signed in to it on your device, your boss-rematch times and run record go to its leaderboards and your medals become achievements. Signed out, nothing is sent and nothing in the game changes.

I am stuck at the start — the cell block door will not open.

Three things open it: take the blue hat off the hook, pick up the guard’s blaster off the floor, and clear all four cells. The caption at the bottom of the screen names whichever one is still waiting.

The boss entrance is closed.

Each land’s boss is sealed behind a ring until you have freed the person held in every cave in that land. Freed captives walk to the boss gate themselves and break the ring together. The world map marks caves that still hold someone.

An enemy is ignoring my shots.

A form more than fifteen levels above you takes nothing from bullets, rolls, or the Vow, and it moves slightly faster than your walk. You cannot fight it yet. You can outrun it — run or roll — and come back later.

There is a violet mark over a cave mouth, and a plate inside that only lets me LOOK.

That is one of the Sealwright’s deep caves, under the last cave of each boss land. The seal reads the Point in your hand, and it will not open while the Crown still holds that land. Beat the land’s boss — the knight — and after the victory ceremony the seal lets go: the plate offers DESCEND, and the floors below are yours. If you are playing an older save, every land you had already won opens the first time you load it.

The hatch in a fortress yard will not open.

Each hatch is choked by one land’s matter (thorn, a dead lodestone, murk, a torrent, a mirage, an ember vent, a drift) and it wants a specific bullet element to clear it. LOOK at it and it tells you which, and which land keeps that element — usually a land further along than the one you are in. Own that element, then shoot the hatch; it counts as long as you have the element, whatever your bullets are set to. The land must also be one you have already won.

What is a Facet, and where did it go? It is not in my ability bar.

A Facet is permanent. It is fused into the Point in your hand the moment you find it, it is always on, and it never takes a slot in the ability bar, so it cannot be lost, spent, or run out. None of them changes how much damage you deal; they change things like how soon healing starts, how fast your sprint returns, or how far a shockwave shoves you. The Facets page in the pause menu lists all ten, what each one does, and where the ones you have not found are waiting.

A fourth line appeared on the errand board. Do I have to do it?

That is a Hunt: a champion of the forms has come back to the land, with an escort, and it is set a little above your level. It appears once a restored town’s three errands are done. It is optional. If it is too much for now, open the board and choose Let it go; the board takes it back and you can take it again later, with the champion whole. The first Hunt you hand in anywhere gives you the WAYMARK Facet; every later one gives a shield.

The TRAVEL list on a tower roof shows fortresses now. Why some and not others?

The tower half of the list is every tower you have climbed. The fortress half comes from the WAYMARK Facet (the reward for your first Hunt) and shows every fortress you have found in a land you have won. Find a fortress on foot, win the land, and it appears.

Is there anything for accessibility?

The game is played in landscape with large on-screen buttons, no timed text, and no audio cue you need to hear to finish a fight. Story pages wait for a tap, so nothing scrolls past you. If something is hard to read or hard to reach on your device, email us and tell us which screen.

Does it contain anything I should know about before my kid plays?

It is a shooter, but nothing in it is realistic: you play a small figure in a blue hat, the enemies are hooded figures built out of simple shapes, and a defeated one bursts into confetti. There is no blood, no gore, no swearing, no chat, no ads, no purchases, and no links out of the app. The story is about a king who took the colour out of the world, and it touches on imprisonment and loss.
